Ghana Music Streaming Revenue Doubles as Digital Adoption Surges

Music · 2026-03-28 · By Abena Mensah

Revenue from music streaming in Ghana has doubled compared to the previous year, according to data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The growth, driven by increased smartphone penetration, affordable data plans, and the global popularity of Ghanaian artists, represents one of the fastest rates of streaming revenue growth in sub-Saharan Africa. Total digital music revenue in Ghana now exceeds fifty million dollars annually.

The growth is concentrated on major international platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, as well as African-focused platforms like Boomplay and Audiomack that have established strong presences in the Ghanaian market. Boomplay in particular has seen explosive growth in Ghana, attributing its success to a combination of competitive pricing, curated African music playlists, and data-efficient streaming technology optimized for the country's mobile internet infrastructure.

Ghanaian artists are the primary beneficiaries of the streaming boom, with top performers earning significantly more from digital platforms than from traditional music sales. Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Black Sherif, and Gyakie all feature among Africa's most-streamed artists, and their success has created a visible pathway that inspires emerging artists to invest in quality production and strategic digital releases. The era of relying primarily on live performance revenue is evolving as streaming becomes an increasingly important income source.

Music industry executives note that while the growth is encouraging, challenges remain in ensuring that streaming revenue is distributed fairly to artists, songwriters, and producers. The Musicians Union of Ghana has called for greater transparency from streaming platforms regarding royalty calculations and payment timelines. Industry discussions about establishing a Ghanaian music rights organization with modern digital capabilities are ongoing, reflecting the sector's need to adapt its infrastructure to the digital economy.
