WHO Commends Ghana for Significant Malaria Reduction Progress

World · 2025-07-22 · By Abena Mensah

The World Health Organization has commended Ghana for achieving a thirty percent reduction in malaria cases over the past five years, citing the country's comprehensive approach to malaria prevention and treatment as a model for other sub-Saharan African nations. The recognition came during a WHO regional conference in Accra, where Ghana's Health Minister presented data showing sustained progress across multiple indicators.

Ghana's success has been attributed to a combination of expanded insecticide-treated bed net distribution, improved access to rapid diagnostic testing in rural health facilities, and the deployment of the RTS,S malaria vaccine in pilot regions. The vaccine programme, which began as part of a WHO-coordinated trial, has demonstrated significant effectiveness in reducing severe malaria cases among children under five, the demographic most vulnerable to the disease.

Community health workers have played a central role in the progress. The government has trained and deployed thousands of community health officers across rural and peri-urban areas, providing testing, treatment, and prevention education at the household level. These workers have been particularly effective in reaching communities with limited access to formal healthcare facilities, ensuring that malaria cases are detected and treated early before they become life-threatening.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. Malaria continues to be the leading cause of outpatient visits in Ghana, and resistance to both insecticides and antimalarial drugs threatens to undermine gains. Climate change is also affecting malaria transmission patterns, with some previously low-risk areas experiencing increased cases as temperatures and rainfall patterns shift. Health officials emphasized that sustained investment and continued innovation are essential to maintaining and building on the current trajectory.
