Accra Fashion Week Showcases Emerging Ghanaian Designers
Accra Fashion Week has concluded its most successful edition to date, featuring over fifty designers from Ghana and across the African continent. The four-day event, held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, showcased collections that blend traditional Ghanaian textiles and craftsmanship with contemporary fashion design, attracting buyers, media, and fashion enthusiasts from around the world.
Among the standout collections were those by emerging designers who used locally sourced kente, ankara, and batik fabrics in innovative ways. Designer Ama Serwah presented a collection inspired by Ashanti royal court aesthetics, featuring flowing gowns and tailored suits constructed from hand-woven kente cloth. The collection received a standing ovation and generated immediate interest from international boutique buyers seeking authentic African luxury fashion.
Sustainability was a major theme throughout the event. Several designers highlighted their use of organic cotton grown in northern Ghana, natural dyes derived from local plants, and zero-waste cutting techniques that minimize fabric waste. A panel discussion on sustainable fashion in Africa drew a packed audience, with speakers arguing that African fashion has an opportunity to lead the global industry in ethical and environmentally responsible practices.
The event also featured a Fashion Business Summit that connected designers with investors, retailers, and export consultants. The Ghana Export Promotion Authority participated, offering guidance on navigating international markets and meeting quality standards required by European and American retailers. Organizers announced that the next edition will expand to include a dedicated menswear day and an increased focus on accessories and footwear design.
