Kumasi International Film Festival 2026 Opens Call for Film Entries
The Kumasi International Film Festival has officially opened its call for entries for the 2026 edition, inviting filmmakers from Ghana, Africa, and the global diaspora to submit their works for consideration. The festival, now in its fifth year, has established itself as an important platform for independent cinema in West Africa, providing exposure, networking opportunities, and cash prizes for selected filmmakers. This year's edition will take place over five days in August at multiple venues across Kumasi, including the Kumasi Cultural Centre and Prempeh Assembly Hall.
The festival accepts submissions in several categories including feature films, short films, documentaries, animation, and a new category for web series that reflects the growing importance of digital content in African storytelling. Films must have been completed after January 2025 and can be submitted in any language with English subtitles required for non-English productions. A special focus this year is on films addressing climate change and environmental issues in Africa, with a dedicated environmental cinema strand and an associated prize for the best film in this category.
Festival director Kwame Boateng emphasized that the event serves a dual purpose: celebrating African cinema excellence and nurturing the next generation of talented Ghanaian filmmakers. To this end, the festival includes an industry program featuring masterclasses, pitch sessions, and one-on-one mentoring opportunities with established filmmakers and producers from across the continent. Last year's festival attracted submissions from 28 countries and screened over 60 films, with audiences exceeding 5,000 over the festival period. Boateng expressed strong confidence that this year's numbers will surpass previous records.
The festival has also announced partnerships with several international film festivals and cultural organizations that will provide opportunities for selected films to be screened at events in Europe and North America. Additionally, a co-production market will connect Ghanaian filmmakers with potential international partners and financiers. The submission deadline is June 30, 2026, with all entries managed through the festival's online platform. The full festival program and jury panel will be announced in July, with early bird passes available for purchase starting immediately.
