Disc Jockeying in Ghana is a very male dominated craft, with the likes of DJ Mensah, DJ Vyrusky, DJ Black, among others making waves with their art.

However there are a lot of talented female DJs in Ghana, who are doing equally well but are mostly unsung. This article seeks to throw a spotlight on the Top 10 female DJs in Ghana you should totally consider working with.

1. DJ Kess

DJ Kess

DJ Kess has been working professionally as a DJ for about 8years. She is also a music producer and beat maker with released songs such as  Whine Dat, Pilolo, among others. DJ Kess has been awarded Best Female DJ at the Ghana DJ Awards two times in a row. She was also nominated for the Best Female DJ at the African Global DJ Awards 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has also been a guest DJ on various platforms such as Big Brother Africa (2011), Etisalat Epiq Nation concert, 2012, among others. DJ Kess currently works with YFM as a DJ for YLounge with Akosua Hanson. DJ Kess has also worked with top Ghanaian artistes such as Sarkodie, Pappy Kojo, etc.

2. DJ Switch

DJ Switch is the youngest female DJ and the youngest award winning DJ in Ghana. She is currently 10years old and began DJing at the age of 7. DJ Switch rose to fame through Talented Kids, a kids reality show in Ghana. DJ Switch has been on stages such as the Goal Keepers 2018 in the USA, which was attended by high profiled professionals such as the French President, Bill Gates among others. She has also been on the Ghana Meets Naija 2018 stage. DJ Switch doubles as a rapper and singer with her debut single ‘Deceiver’.

3. DJ Keyzuz

Keyzuz is noted for her face masks, which we believe is an art to get audience focused on her craft rather than her gender. In Ghana where the popular sound is hiplife, highlife and afrobeats, Keyzuz challenges the status quo by producing electronic sounds. She is the founder of BeatPhreaks, a project that promotes talents, especially women, in the Ghanaian music scenes. Keyzuz has also gained recognition on international stages such as Glassglow’s Fuse By Vajpower, Fusion Festival, Tortrassen Festival, Future Fest, the only Electronic Music festival in Ghana, organised by Alliance Française, Sabolai Radio Music Festival amongst others. She has been featured in The Africa Report magazine as one of the few people on the continent changing perceptions about women who DJ. She is also a frequent guest DJ on the annual Chale Wote Street Art Festival stage. Keyzuz works with Ghanaian rapper M.anifest.

4. Mz. Orstin

Mz. Orstin

Mz. Orstin is a radio and club DJ with YFM and AM & PM Sports Bar. Mz. Orstin introduced her own project dubbed “Wednesday Nights” at Bella Roma night club, only 7 months into her DJ career. She has also played in almost all the trendy and popular clubs and bars in Accra such as Yacht Club, Plot 7 One2One Bar, Twist and Sky Bar, One to One Bar, Venus Lounge, Firefly Lounge among others. Mz. Orstin also performed on the Miss Malaika 2017 stage

5. TMSKD DJ Mitchy

The Masked DJ (TMSKD DJ) also known as DJ Mitchy is known to mask her face on every set. It is also believed to be a progessive art to divert attention from her gender to her talent and craft. DJ Mitchy has had several installations from the Annual Chale Wote Street Art Festival, to installations inside Club Carbon (Alt Carbon) among others. She is noted for afro fusion and electronic music. DJ Mitchy, last year began a projected called “Femme Vibes” a night of music that sees performances from only female talents; from MCs to DJs to singers and other performers. Mitchy is also the mastermind brain behind the syndicated EARGASM EDM SHOW. She currently is the CO-HOST of KONA LIVE WITH KACEY MOORE a weekly Accra Night Life show that showcases new school talents.

6. DJ Nyce

DJ Nyce has displayed her craft through an amazing fusion of all genres seamlessly with soothing scratch skills.
She has performed on huge sets and multinational brands like the Vodafone 020 Live Concerts, Girl Talk Concert with Efya (one of Ghana’s biggest female artistes), Sound City Activations, Tidal Rave, Ghana’s biggest annual beach party and music concert, amongst others. She also has a social women empowerment campaign dubbed ‘Nyce to be a woman’ which has featured celebrities like Vanessa Mdee (Tanzania) , Richie (Lynx Entertainment), Jupitar, DJ Vyrusky, BerlaMundi , Mzvee, Feli Nuna and more. She has won several awards and has received several nominations including one from the prestigious Afrimma Awards.

7. DJ MJ

DJ MJ doubles as a road manager to two upcoming female artistes, Tsoobi and Migya. She had also worked with female rapper Eno Barony, and other male artistes. She is noted for producing amazing mixtapes such as the Mood Mixtape and the Khikz Down Mixtape. She has had some radio experience with XFM, radio Gold, 3fm and Montie fm and has also played at some top night clubs like Tantra night club, Devino (DnD), Aphrodisiac, Django, Hollywood night club, Coco Vanilla,Kona Café,Citadel Nite Club, Le Select –Togo, Kahuna, Tarven amongst others. She took part in the Hitz FM’s Hottest DJ competition and BPM national DJ where she placed 2nd and 4th respectively. She was also nominated for Ghana DJ awards in Discovery DJ and Best Female DJ awards of the year as well as best female DJ of the Year. DJ MJ is currently working on the MJ riddim, which will be released in December. She’s also working on the “Divas Invasion” project, which seeks to celebrate female musicians and DJs.

8. DJ Akel

DJ Akel is a TV, Radio, Club and Events DJ, currently who works with Kwese TV. In the past, she has worked with A1 radio in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region of Ghana, Onua FM and 3FM. She also performed at the just ended Kundum Beach Jam, organised by Black Avenue Music as part of the Nzema Kumdum Festival in Axim.

9. DJ Tipsy

DJ Tipsy doubles as a music producer and has received several nominations in the Ghana DJ Awards. She is currently the resident DJ for Ghana Music Radio, an online radio station, and also handles audio content on Ghana Music.com. DJ Tipsy is also noted for her collaboration with upcoming female dancehall artiste, Sonia Martinson, as the official DJ for the artiste.

10. DJ Teena

DJ Teena discovered her passion as a disc jockey from high school. She has since been actively working on improving her craft. This has earned her several nominations is various editions of the Ghana DJ Awards. DJ Teena works as the resident DJ at Mayacova Beach Club, Calabash Beach Resort and Etoile Gardens. She has also been guest DJ at Passions Night Club and also DJs at various events. She is also known for her works as a presenter and producer both on TV and Radio. In 2017 she produced a Hip Hop soundtrack titled ‘Charley’.
