Artiste and Repertoire (A&R) Manager of Zylofon Music, Lawrence Asiamah Hanson, also known as BullDog has called for a data levy to be imposed on telecommunication networks in Ghana (AirtelTigo, Vodafone, MTN, Expresso and Glo) for data charges on audio video downloads.
BullDog stated that costs incurred from downloading audio and video files benefit the telecommunication networks only, leaving artistes out.
“Let us introduce data levy……When Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Becca or Kumi Guitar put any content on the Internet, the telcos allow for downloads…. We are copying blindly. A site like Spotify do not allow for free downloads often. If there is any case as such, it is a bait and defaulters suffer the consequences (a law suit is filed)”, he told Sammy Flex on Showbiz Agenda.
The Boss of Bullhaus Entertainment explained that artistes could accumulate a chunk of wealth if the data levy is instituted. All things being equal, data charges would translate into a good amount of money for artistes, considering how digital platforms are used through the various telecommunication networks, to upload audio and video files.
