A sensational renowned Ghanaian poet, Mutombo Da Poet asserts that even though poetry has gained prominence, it is not financially beneficial to poets. He added that, the cash inflow from poetry recitals and performances is not enough to pay bills and provide sustenance.
A lot of young talented poets such as Nana Asaase, Rhyme Sony, Poetra Asantewaa, Chief Moomen, Mutombo Da Poet and Gombilla among others have fought relentlessly to make poetry/spoken word as attractive as music, movies and fashion in the world market. However, the creative venture does not fetch sufficient financial returns.
Poetry, as a creative venture in Ghana, has been given less recognition over the years, save for a handful of great orators that emerged. Until recently, poetry, otherwise known as spoken word performances were reserved for curtain-raisers at entertainment shows.
