The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta has touted the merits of the Free SHS policy since its inception, adding that the number of beneficiaries are projected to reach 1,264,000 students by 2020.
Mr Ofori-Atta stated that the policy had already catered for some 794,899 students on its mandate to deliver secondary education free for all.
During the 2020 Budget presentation on the floor of Parliament on November 13, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta said:
“At the end of the 2018/19 academic year, total beneficiaries for the first two cohorts was 794,899 students.
“The number of beneficiaries is projected to reach 1,264,000 with the addition of the third cohort,” he added.
According to him, the Free SHS policy had relieved parents of up to GH 1.8 million for the past 3 years.
Mr Ofori-Atta noted that the implementation of the Free SHS had opened up education opportunities.
He added that the exploits recorded were the highest in Ghana’s history
“Enrolment at the secondary level increased significantly by 43 per cent between 2016 and 2018,” he said.
