1975年12月2日，邓小平副总理与福特总统会谈。福特表示：由于美国国内形势的需要，解决中美关系正常化问题须推迟到1976年大选后再仿照“日本方式”采取行动。邓小平指出：按照“日本方式”，也就是中国政府提出的同台湾断交、废约、撤军三个原则。
On December 2,1975,Vice-Premier Deng Xiaoping held talks with President Gerald Ford. Ford stated that due to the needs if the internal situation in the US,solution to normalization of the Sino-American relations would be postponed until the days after the US Election in 1976, and actions would also be taken toward initating"Japan's pattern". Deng Xiaoping pointed out that following "Japan's pattern" would mean the three principles upheld by the Chinese Government:severance of American relations with Taiwan,abrogation of all the treaties between the US and Taiwan and withdrawal of the American troops from Tqiwan.
